MERCHANT NAVY COMMEMORATIVE THEME PROJECT (MNCTP)
A MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND THEIR FAMILIES
ON CANADA’S POLICE AND PEACE OFFICERS’ NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY
SEPTEMBER 26, 2021
OTTAWA, Today –
Mr. Stéphane Ouellette,
President and CEO, MNCTP, expressed his gratitude to law enforcement officers and their
families for their vital role, contributions, and for their ultimate sacrifice in serving and protecting our communities on Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. On September 24, 1998, the Government of Canada proclaimed the last Sunday of September ‘forevermore’ as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. This day was stablished to remember the women and men that have died in the line of duty protecting our homes,
family, and friends.
It is a time to honour them by pausing and reflecting on their level of courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to defending our freedoms, social values, and a collection of cherished traditions that affect and benefit all Canadians coast–to–coast– to–coast.

Quotes
“This Sunday, September 26, 2021, RCMP Veterans across Canada will join our
colleagues in the law enforcement community marking the 44th Annual Canadian Police
and Peace Officer Memorial as we remember our valiant Fallen who died in the line of
duty serving and protecting Canadians. We mourn the tragic loss this past year of OPP
Cst. Marc Hovingh, Sgt. Andrew Harnett, Calgary Police Service; Cst. Jeffrey Northrop,
Toronto Police Service; and RCMP Cst. Shelby Patton.
“Our hearts are with their families and their loved ones for whom their absence is most
painful. We choose to remember these officers as they lived, though we’ll never forget
how they died. Their sacrifice will find their names chiseled on sacred stones upon which
hundreds of names sadly precede them. On behalf of the members of the RCMP
Veterans’ Association, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families and colleagues
and profound respect for the memory of these officers. We will remember them.”
– Alexander P. (Sandy) Glenn, National President, RCMP Veterans’ Association [from
Statement – RCMP VA President for 2021 Canadian Police and Peace Officers
Memorial webpage.]
“Along with our gallant sailors, soldiers, airmen, and airwomen, our first responders are
the heart and soul of the people and the spirit of nations. The predominantly overlooked
significance of their contributions and sacrifices is an attestation to their indomitable
spirit that should weigh heavily on our collective national and worldwide
conscientiousness. Indeed, the sacrifices and contributions made by our veterans and
women and men in uniform, form the very bedrock on which our democratic institutions
are built, and provides us with the freedoms so many of us take for granted today.
“The MNCTP stands with our first responders, military, veterans, members of the
intelligence community, and all that remain steadfast for the ideals and principles for
which they fought and died to protect.”
– Stéphane Ouellette, President and CEO, MNCTP
