Hugh Bowyer joined the RCMP on October 1, 1952. Following recruit training as a member of Squad 99/C, he was posted to British Columbia.
While serving in Shawnigan Lake Detachment, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for Gallantry for his part in the rescue of a man trapped and buried in gypsum quarry. As then Cst. Bowyer, a civilian and two other RCMP members – Cst. William Bennett and Cst. Kenneth McHale worked to dig the man out of a large pile of frozen gypsum that had fallen upon him, the wall surrounding them began to give way. Cst. Bowyer backed against the wall and supported it from collapsing while the other Constables quickly dug the trapped man out. The rescue operation succeeded and the survived.
Hugh Bowyer served in other locations during his career in British Columbia, including in Prince George. He retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant on May 6, 1979.
